In the narrow corridor of a former shooting range I gave new impulse to the recurring theme of my
work: the play with the vague boundaries between reality and illusion. A film of a dancer is
projected on a screen. The choreography which the dancer performs was recorded in the same
space with a steady cam. In the darkened space he is dancing to James Browns “Sex Machine”.
At the exact moment that he moves from the middle of the space and jumps against the right wall
the screen moves in the same direction. The screen is computer controlled and can move from
front to back and sideways. During the entire choreographed sequence, the screen follows the
movements of the dancer. Or does the dancer follow the movements of the screen? Through this
imitation of the screen and dancer, the filmed dancer appears to become three-dimensional again
in the dark space. One forgets that he is projected onto a two-dimensional screen and the viewer
experiences a “true illusion”.
