CITIES OF CONTINUOUS LINES
Untitled, photograph, 110 x 138 cm, 2006
In 2005 we travelled along both of Italy's coasts to visit various colonie marine, using an old map from a 1985 Domus magazine.
We visited the Fiat Tower twice, in 2005 and 2006. In November, on our second visit, the structure was not in use. Inside the tower it was dark, because all the windows were closed. We climbed the spiral slope leading to the children's rooms, which open directly onto the communal space. Here every bed or cupboard is specially designed to compensate for the slope of the floor and the convexity of the walls. Each room has about four windows, which follow the curvature of the space, as well. As we climbed the spiral, which is 600 metres in length, we opened the blinds of more than 300 windows. Whenever we opened one, it unexpectedly revealed a different view of the alternating surroundings of mountains, city, and sea. Our perception of height and direction was changing all the time.
